File Naming

File naming conventions are needed to allow easy exchange of files between different operating systems. Correct file extensions will allow Windows users to more easily open documents created on a Macintosh.

Creating Compatible Filenames

  1. Filenames must not contain any of the following characters:
    / \ : * ? " < > |
  2. All filenames must end with an extension.
    Microsoft Word Documents .doc
    Microsoft Excel Documents .xls
    Microsoft PowerPoint Documents .ppt
    Filemaker Pro Documents .fmp

Examples:

File Type Filename Filename with Extension
Microsoft Word New Faculty New Faculty.doc
Microsoft Excel Biological Sciences Budget Biological Sciences Budget.xls
Microsoft Power Point New Building New Building.ppt
Filemaker Pro Class Grades Class Grades.fmp
