Contiguous BS/MS Program
The Division of Biological Sciences offers a contiguous program leading to a Master of Science Degree in Biology for current UCSD undergraduate students who are enrolled in any of the 8 Biology majors. Qualified students can earn the MS degree within 3-5 quarters following receipt of the BS degree. Students enrolled in this program receive an advanced research experience by completing at least six contiguous quarters of biological research in one of the excellent research labs at UCSD. In addition, the BS/MS students complete 12 units of graduate-level courses in Biology, Medicine, or other disciplines related to their thesis project. Students complete their degree requirements by writing and defending a Master's thesis.

Interested students should contact the BS/MS Coordinator in the Biology Student & Instructional Services Office before the end of their junior year. For students who have already started their senior year, make sure to e-mail the BS/MS Coordinator as soon as possible!

Biological Sciences Research Showcase - Wednesday, June 5th, 2013
Are you participating this year (2012-2013) in MS-level research as part of the BS/MS program? Would you like the opportunity to share your Master's research with other interested students and faculty? Do you want to gain experience presenting your scientific findings while developing your communication skills? Then you don't want to miss the chance to be involved in the Division of Biological Sciences' Research Showcase 2013! The Research Showcase is a forum for students to exhibit the exciting research that is taking place in labs all over campus. UCSD faculty, staff, students, alumni and industry representatives will be invited to mingle and discuss students' work. The deadline to register is May 24th! Don't miss out! Please Consider Making Your Defense a Public Defense!
Having a public thesis defense is a terrific public speaking and networking opportunity, and adds to the collective scientific knowledge within the BS/MS community. To make your defense a public defense, please send an email including the date, time, and location of your thesis defense, as well as your thesis title, to the BS/MS Coordinator. A flyer announcing your thesis defense will be sent to the MS students and BS/MS thesis advisors. Your fellow students will thank you for the opportunity to learn from your experience!
Publication Opportunity for Biology MS Students!
In response to past inquiries from faculty members and MS students, the Saltman Quarterly now welcomes brevia letters from students currently enrolled in the MS portion of the Biology Contiguous BS/MS program, and also from recent graduates. This is an exciting opportunity for MS students to publish their current research findings, and will not preclude the future publication of their research in other scientific journals. SQ accepts both finished and in-progress research. To be eligible for selection, in-progress research must include significant preliminary findings at the time of submission. Brevia letters provide a brief overview of the student's independent biological research and are limited to 300-500 words and must include one graphic figure (table, graph, picture, etc.). Biological Sciences MS GSA Representative
Fiona Nohilly has been elected by her peers to serve as the Biological Sciences MS student representative to the UCSD Graduate Student Association (GSA). She will serve as the GSA rep for the remainder of the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Congratulations, Fiona!
