Biology Triton Talks 2020

The Division of Biological Sciences welcomes all admitted students to UC San Diego. Our division is made up of a bustling community of students, staff, and faculty who are eager to learn with you and support you on your journey as you explore your academic interests at the university. As part of our welcome, we have prepared a series of online sessions for you to attend throughout the spring to follow after Virtual Triton Day and Virtual Transfer Triton Day.

Divisional Welcome

Dr. Laurie Smith, Director of Undergraduate Education for the Division of Biological Sciences, will welcome all admitted Biology majors to the division! She will provide an overview of the division’s services and programs for undergraduates while highlighting Biology’s groundbreaking research areas.

Capped Major 

Admitted into a non-Biology major, and interested in declaring Biology in the future? This session is for you! We will review the application guidelines and answer questions about options for non-biology majors who enter UC San Diego as freshmen.

Note: Transfer students admitted to UC San Diego in a non-Biology major are not eligible to declare a biology major as a primary or secondary (double) major after matriculation to UC San Diego.

Student Organization: BioScholars Program at UCSD

BioScholars is a learning community dedicated to supporting Biology undergraduates with challenging inellectual and leadership opportunities for academically excelling biology undergraduates. Incoming freshmen and transfer students will be invited to apply. Membership restricted to declared Biology majors with a GPA of 3.7 and above.

Student Engagement Opportunities in Biological Sciences

Student Organization: Saltman Quarterly

Saltman Quarterly (SQ) is one of a handful of student-run undergraduate research journals in the country. This award-winning program provides members with opportunities to develop their skills in science communication in a range of roles from reporting, writing, photography, and graphic design. SQ is open to non-majors and biology minors.

Research Opportunities

Student Organization: Biological Sciences Student Association (BSSA)

BSSA strives to educate, enrich, and empower students focused on the biological sciences. BSSA provides opportunities in professional development, community service, mentorship, and more. Open to non-majors and biology minors.

Faculty Advising

Students in each of the seven majors offered by the Division have a direct connection to their research area via faculty advisors. Faculty advisors are versed on the curriculum and can answer questions that students have about specific areas of interest in biology. A faculty advisor will answer questions that students have about their degree programs.

Health Beat: the pulse of health professions at UC San Diego

Are you considering a pre-med or pre-health path? Health Beat exists to provide you with the most up to date information concerning what you need to do to pursue a career in the health professions as a student at UC San Diego. Health Beat at the Career Center is one of the many partners of the Division of Biological Sciences.  This session is an introduction to Health Beat's services for admitted freshman. If you are an admitted transfer student, please register for the transfer-specific Health Beat session.
