Division of Biological Sciences

Graduate Studies

The Affiliated Doctoral Program in Biological Sciences between the Division of Biological Sciences and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies boasts over 100 faculty who provide a supportive and stimulating environment to enable highly talented individuals to develop the skills and experience necessary to become world-class scientists. Our research encompasses a wide range of basic and applied biological questions, allowing graduate students the opportunity to be on the leading edge of discovery for the next generation of scientists. In our program, interdisciplinary research thrives  because we value creating exciting scientific solutions by combining innovations in biology with those in mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering.A key indicator of the quality of our program is represented by the successful placement history of our graduate students.

Who we are / What we've done

Student Spotlight - Britt Flaherty

Britt Flaherty

“I came to UC San Diego because of the many biotech opportunities in the San Diego area, but what has made it such a wonderful experience is how much the biology department cares for its graduate students.”

Third-year grad student Britt Flaherty is researching biofuels and how transcription factors function in cell development, an essential part of figuring out how biofuels create energy. More
