Neural Genetics

How genes affect neuronal mechanisms.

Genes and their interactions drive the structure and functioning of all cells. Knowledge of the genes responsible for the special functions of neurons is being used by members of the NB group to understand how a variety of genes perform these functions. They also use genetics as a powerful tool to manipulate the properties of neurons in ways impossible with any other technique. Mostly conventional genetic systems (Caenorhabditic elegans, Drosophila, and mice) are being used, and some members of the NB group apply the derived genetic tools to unconventional systems (frogs, chicks, rats), too.
