Neural Plasticity

How the nervous system is modified by internal programs and external events.

The intrinsic properties of neurons and their connections are modified during normal development and by interactions with the external world. NB laboratories study both kinds of plasticity in a variety of ways: in behaving animals, in brain slices, in dissociated cell cultures. The techniques used include molecular genetics, biochemistry, multi-unit electrical recording, optical recording, optogenetic stimulation, and computational modeling.
