Issue 17: Fall 2025
UC San Diego's Behind Every Breakthrough campaign highlights advancements that demonstrate the critical importance of research funding. One recent example was created in a BioSci lab: Professor Yunde Zhao's revolutionary RUBY. The cost-effective innovation offers a game-changing new way to track gene activity, and is now proving valuable across a range of fields in labs around the world.
America has long been the undisputed global leader in science and innovation, propelling our economy and improving everyday lives at home and abroad. But federal support for scientific research and development has been in decline for decades — hindering the search for solutions that will save lives and define our nation’s future.
BioSci Assistant Professor Nabora Reyes de Barboza studies critical factors that influence lung functions during development, regeneration and aging. In this Behind Every Breakthrough video, hear how cuts to federally funded research are impacting her lab’s vital research and the next generation of scientists.
At the heart of many modern scientific discoveries lies technology — tools that allow researchers to see, measure and understand life at its most fundamental levels. The Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox is redefining how scientists approach these breakthroughs. The new facility offers a cutting-edge collaborative space where disciplines intersect, ideas take shape and the next generation of researchers gains hands-on experience with the latest tools and equipment that will drive the future of biology and medicine. To stay informed about Sandbox-related news, initiatives, events, trainings and research, please subscribe to the Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox listserv.
How do humans and animals make decisions? Researchers including Assistant Professor Marcus Benna and doctoral student Ji-An Li deployed AI in innovative ways to understand this process. By using tiny artificial neural networks, the researchers’ work illuminates in detail what drives an individual’s actual choices — regardless of whether those choices are optimal or not.
School of Biological Sciences faculty members Vineet Augustine, Scott Biering, Alex Chaim, Vu Nguyen and Noah Rose have been selected as 2025-2026 Hellman Fellows. They are part of the largest cohort in the UC San Diego program's history.
The Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind (KIBM) at UC San Diego has announced its fourth cohort of postdoctoral scholars. KIBM cultivates programs and research that increase our understanding of the origins, development, evolution and mechanisms of the brain and mind. In an effort to advance innovative research, KIBM provides financial support and networking opportunities for outstanding postdoctoral scholars at UC San Diego and the Salk Institute.
As the academic school year opened, BioSci students were welcomed with a Resource Fair event, which featured 17 organizations and offices (from across the university) that introduced services and offerings to enhance student success. Students were treated to donuts while they got to chat with faculty, librarians, advisors, tutors, student organization members and many others.
They want to change the world — whether it’s advocating for children, bringing more empathy to healthcare or shaping the future of learning — and they have a plethora of lived experiences. Yet, the one thing these new Tritons, including Neurobiology major Mia Rodriguez, all share is a story of resilience and purpose. Learn more about Mia's goal of turning a history with chronic migraines into a career in pediatric neurology.
