Tracking A New Path to Octopus and Squid Sensing Capabilities
Therapeutic Potential of Bizarre 'Jumbo' Viruses Tapped for HHMI Emerging Pathogens Project
UC San Diego and its collaborating partners will leverage the biomedical promise of viruses known as bacteriophages as new therapeutic agents in the fight against the rising crisis of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.
Video: Researchers Identify Elusive Carbon Dioxide Sensor in Plants
UC San Diego biologists led by Professor Julian Schroeder's lab have identified a long-sought carbon dioxide sensor in plants, a discovery that holds implications for trees, crops and wildfires. The researchers found that two proteins work together to form the sensor, which is key for water evaporation, photosynthesis and plant growth.
Groundbreaking at Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve
Campus leaders and supporters gathered at the Kendall-Frost Field Marsh Reserve, part of UC San Diego's Natural Reserve System, for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Field Station and Community Learning Center. The new facility features flexible space for a modern laboratory, classroom, observation deck and community events.

In Memoriam: Immo Scheffler
We are saddened to share news of the passing of Professor Emeritus Immo Scheffler, a world-renowned expert on mitochondria and a widely-acclaimed educator with a broad influence on the UC San Diego campus for more than four decades. Donations in his honor can be made to UC San Diego's Emeriti Association Chancellor's Scholarship fund.
Dr. An Wu, an assistant project scientist in Professor Takaki Komiyama's laboratory and previously a postdoctoral scholar in the Komiyama Lab, tragically died in a Montreal building fire on March 16. Dr. Wu was a brilliant neuroscientist and elevated the many lives she touched. A memorial fund for international postdoctoral fellowships has been established in her memory.

Meet A Master's Student:
Q&A With Juliana Fox
Meet BioSci master's student Juliana Fox, who explores the connection between student epistemology, which is an individual's conception of knowledge, and academic performance. Find out what a typical day looks like as a master's student and how her new interests are taking her to new heights.
Five Questions for Biological Sciences Alum Steve Monfort
Get to know Biological Sciences alum Steve Monfort (bachelor's degree, '80), the executive director of the University of California Natural Reserve System—the world's largest university-managed network of natural areas. He discusses his background, training and UC's 41 field stations across 47,000 acres of land, including our Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve.
