Workshop Topics, Schedule & Registration

Open to undergraduate and graduate BioSci students

Career Development Workshops are in person and are designed to help you launch a meaningful career and feel a sense of belonging in whatever career path you choose. You’ll learn about what career paths are available, how to submit a competitive internship and job application, how to master an interview, how to build your professional network, and how to succeed on the job with highly developed soft skills. Each topic is explored first with a presentation and panel discussion, followed by a skill application workshop where you’ll practice what you learned the week prior. Workshops are designed to be taken in consecutive order, but if you miss a workshop, no problem—try taking it the next quarter.

Week 1 | Presentation & Panel: Career Exploration

Learn about the unlimited career paths available to you with your biology degree. We’ll cover careers in the life sciences industry, environmental and policy, academic research, healthcare and medicine, and more. You’ll learn from early- and mid-career professionals as well as executives on what types of roles different career fields offer, and about panelists' nonlinear career pathways and how they got to where they are today.

We’ll start by briefly discussing skills needed in different career paths and you’ll do a brief assessment to discover how your skills, interests, and personality traits can apply to your career path. Guests will join who hold careers in a variety of different fields, including the life sciences industry, environmental and policy, academic research, healthcare and medicine. Week 3 | Presentation & Panel: Resume, CV, Cover Letter, LinkedIn, Cold Email

No matter your experience level, you will be able to write an appealing resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile by highlighting your transferable skills—skills that you already have and can creatively apply to the job you’re interested in. For example, if you’ve been a coffee shop barista, your ability to collaborate, communicate and solve problems in a fast-paced environment would make you an excellent candidate for a research lab position. You’ll also learn how to write a cold email, which you’ll do if you’re interested in working at a lab on campus if the position is not posted.
