About the Lecturer

Distinguished Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine
University of Ottawa

It is a privilege to welcome Dr. Leonard Maler as the 2021 speaker in the Walter F. Heiligenberg Lecture series.

Dr. Maler demonstrated that the study of behavior and network activity of a simple electric fish had the power to reveal fundamental neural principles of perception applicable to higher-level operations in the cortex of mammals. A combination of anatomical, electrophysiological, and computational tools were used to reveal neural mechanisms of feedback input essential for modulating the spatio-temporal filtering of sensory systems. With the recent discovery of recurrent excitatory circuits in the learning centers of fish, Dr. Maler's lab now focuses on understanding general network computations for spatial learning by combining computational and experimental investigation in both electric fish and mice.

Dr. Maler is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and a member of the Mind and Brain Institute and Center for Neural Dynamics. He is an engaging and dynamic speaker, and we hope that you can join us for this special event.

Host: Dr. Jill Leutgeb, jleutgeb@ucsd.edu
