Students from around the world come to UC San Diego to study the biological sciences at one of the top-ranked programs in the nation. Here, undergraduate biology students have the unique opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the lab with preeminent faculty members, surrounded by a thriving biotechnology sector, world-class medical facilities and renowned research institutions.

The Eureka! Summer Research Scholarship at the UC San Diego School of Biological Sciences provides scholarship funding to outstanding students who work full-time in a research lab over the summer. With the goal of supporting these students – who represent the next generation of industry leaders – biotechnology company Revvity recently established the Revvity Access STEM Scholarship Endowment through the Eureka! Scholars program.

“The Revvity Access STEM Scholarships are designed to play an impactful role in supporting undergraduate students’ educational journeys, enabling them to reach their full potential,” said Revvity President and CEO Prahlad Singh. “With a 20+ year presence in San Diego stemming from our acquisition of BioLegend, and through Revvity's global Center of Excellence for research reagent content development, Revvity is grateful for the opportunity to benefit from the best and brightest in the health sciences field every single day. As we work to achieve our goal of solving the world’s greatest health challenges, we recognize the importance in identifying and investing in the next generation of talented minds wherever they may be to move our society forward.”

Eureka! Scholars receive $6,500 in scholarship funding to cover their living expenses over the summer so that they can work full-time in a lab, without the worries of taking on an outside job to support themselves. Spending so much time in the lab often allows students to be able to take ownership of a project, from start to finish, giving them a firsthand view into what a research career would look like.

Students in the program have the opportunity to work in labs that are addressing an array of pressing scientific challenges, from new therapies that treat deadly diseases to improving the world’s food supply to ensuring the sustainability of the planet. Scholars work under the direction of a faculty member and alongside lab managers, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students and others.

“The Eureka! Scholars program provides the opportunity for our students to learn research skills and work on projects aimed at understanding the natural world and having a positive impact,” said Kit Pogliano, dean of the School of Biological Sciences. “We are grateful for Revvity’s donation, which will provide support for a Eureka! Scholar each summer and help pave the way for generations of students to pursue meaningful careers in the biological sciences.”
