"This scholarship has given me the opportunity for an invaluable learning experience within the lab of Dr. Nigel Calcutt that I would not otherwise received. I am a firm believer in the benefits of the direct application of theory to the lab bench and this scholarship has given me the chance to do exactly that. Instead of committing myself to a part-time job, I am now able to dedicate the majority of my time to a research project that is aimed at developing new treatments for diabetic nerve damage (neuropathy). There is currently no treatment for diabetic neuropathy and hopefully, if my project goes well we may soon be able to rapidly translate our findings towards clinical trials and then facilitate its use by people living with diabetes."
